MTN ready to buy Visafone

Telecommunication giant MTN Group is in talks to buy Nigeria’s Visafone Communications to solidify its grip in the South African firm’s most important market, sources familiar with the discussions said on Friday.

Wireless-network operator Visafone was set up eight years ago to deliver voice and broadband services through mobile and fixed telecom platforms after business tycoon Jim Ovia, who also founded Zenith Bank, acquired three operators.

“The deal is done. We’re almost putting ink to paper,” a source close to the deal said. Another source said the talks would conclude “very soon”.Both sources did not say how much MTN would spend on the purchase and how big a stake in Visafone it would take up.

MTN spokesman Chris Maroleng said the company did not comment on market speculation. Visafone officials were not immediately available to confirm whether the firm was involved in discussions.

Visafone grew its subscriber base from 30,000 after the acquisitions in 2007, to 2.2 million at the end of 2014, data from the telecom’s regulator showed. But fixed wireless operators with CDMA technology platforms most suited for broadband and data services have faced stiff competition from more established rivals such as India’s Bharti Airtel, Dubai-based Etisalat and MTN, hitting the industry’s average revenue per user (ARPU).ARPU, a key gauge of telecoms firms’ competitiveness as well as of consumer spending trends, has declined over the past three years to $5 from $8 as competition deepens.

MTN had nearly 60 million users in Nigeria in 2014, about 27 percent of its entire subscriber base across 22countries.Africa’s most populous country is also the biggest contributor to MTN’s revenue, providing more than a third of overall turnover. MTN shares were down 0.4 percent at 1200 GMT and are flat so far this year.

For ladies: 4 surprising stress symptoms

Most of the time, we do not realize just how stretched to the max we truly are, that is, until your our body reaches a breaking point. In reality, you might want to listen a little closer to what your body's trying to tell you, doing so can save your life.

Chronic stress increases your risk for a host of health problems, including high blood pressure, heart attacks, stroke and depression and many more.

Since chilling out is often easier said than done, there are a few simple relaxation strategies to keep in mind, such as breathing exercises, visualization exercises and many more. Listening to music or reading a book can help, too.

The 4 surprising signs below are things you might mistakenly attribute to some other health problem or brush off as nothing to worry about.

1. Weird or reoccurring dreams.

"Unfortunately, the stress we deal with during the day tends to follow us to bed at night and plays out in our dreams," Says Lauri Quinn Loewenberg, author of Dream On It—Unlock Your Dreams, Change Your Life.

Maybe you don't realize you're burning the candle at both ends until that dream comes back where you miss your bus or your house is on fire, two of the five most common stress dreams, according to Loewenberg. However, these dreams might help you pinpoint what exactly is stressing you out and can help you work through why you're feeling that way.

2. Eye twitches

Speaking of spasms, ever had a funny eye twitch? Stress could be to blame. While there's not exactly hard evidence to prove it, many people who complain of a twitch also say they're tired or stressed.

3. Toothache

A number of people grind their teeth in their sleep, or"chew over the day's stressors," Debbie Mandel, author ofAddicted to Stress: A Woman’s 7-Step Program to ReclaimJoy and Spontaneity in Life says. Others may simply clench their jaw while awake and stressed, often without realizing it. But both can lead to pain, and grinding can even crack teeth.

4.Changes in menstrual cycle

Women may experience late or missed periods due to stress. Some may even experience a condition know as secondary amenorrhea, when the cycle seems to completely stop, according to Everyday Health.

Other stressed women may find their periods continue on a regular schedule, but feel far worse. In fact, stress can make cramps up to twice as painful.

For Ladies: Common cause of Cancer

Doctors say cancer, one of the biggest killers of mankind, is preventable as well as curable. On the eve of the World Cancer Day which is on Tuesday, oncologist Dr Manisha Singh tells Banjot Kaur Bhatia 60% of cancer patients happen to be women. Excerpts:

-Which are the most prevalent cancers?

Breast and cervical cancers are more common in women with the prevalence rate being about 33% and 28% respectively. Going by the number of cases we are getting, they are expected to rise by over 50% by 2025 in Bihar.

-What are the common risk factors?

While few risk factors of breast cancer like family history are not preventable, many more are. In recent times, late marriages have emerged as a major reason because first pregnancy after 30 may trigger hormonal imbalances which, in turn, may lead to breast cancer. Also many working women do not breastfeed their child which is harmful for their health. But what is really alarming is the"age-shift". Breast cancer would earlier afflict women after they turned 30. But now even college-going girls are falling victim due to obesity and habits like smoking and alcoholism.

-Which is the most prevalent cancer in rural areas?

In the countryside, cervical cancer is more prevalent, the main reason being unhygienic habits. During menstrual cycles, for instance, girls use cloth pieces instead of sanitary napkins. This leads to spread of human papillomavirus that causes cervical cancer. Defecating in open due to non-availability of toilets could also cause cervical cancer. Intercourse at tender age may cause internal damages that can lead to abnormal mutation in cervical cells. In fact, cervical cancer cases are on the rise in urban areas as well due to sedentary lifestyle habits. They trigger development of cancerous cells in the cervix.

-Are there other causes?

A weak immune system can cause any type of cancer. Unhealthy diets and harmful lifestyle habits expose one to various risk factors that may make cells in any part of the body cancerous. Many women take birth- control pills which are nothing but artificial hormones. Any hormonal medication, if not taken under strict guidance of doctors, may lead to hormonal imbalance that may lead to cancer.

-Does early diagnosis help doctors cure cancer?

The earlier the patient comes, the better the chances of survival. If the cancer is screened in pre-malignant stage, the chances of survival are 100%. Cancer takes almost 10 years to spread. Till Stage I and II of cancer, the situation is not that bad. However, we get more than 80% cases in stage III and IV.

-How does screening play a role?

The earlier the diagnosis, the better are the chances of survival. Menstruating girls must examine their breasts regularly and rush to a doctor if a lump is detected. After the age of 30, every woman must annually get a pap-smear test done. A painless procedure, it costs only Rs 200.Is any vaccination also available?A vaccine is available to prevent cervical cancer. It is given in three doses and the entire course costs around Rs 6,000. Unmarried, teenage girls are fit candidates to take the shot. The vaccine can be taken till 40, but the efficacy decreases with age advancement.

6 Foods to Eat when stressed

When you're having a crazy week at work and you feel like you have been stressed to your limit, the last thing on your mind is dieting.

Naturally, you tend to reach for the available which is usually junk foods, if we are to be honest with ourselves. When it comes to combating stress levels, what you eat may actually help relieve your tension.

Indeed, some foods may help stabilize blood sugar or, better yet, your emotional response.

Here are 6 foods that are easy to reach for yet healthy just for you.

1. Green vegetables

it's easy to reach for a snack when stressed, but try going green at lunch instead."Green leafy vegetables like spinach contain folate, which produces dopamine, a pleasure-inducing brain chemical, helping you keep calm," says Heather Mangieri, RDN, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. A 2012 study in the Journal of Affective Disorders of 2,800 middle-aged and elderly people and found those who consumed the most folate had a lower risk of depression symptoms than those who took in the least.

Another 2013 study from the University of Otago found that college students tended to feel calmer, happier and more energetic on days they ate more fruits and vegetables.

2. Yoghurt

As bizarre as it may sound, the bacteria in your gut might be contributing to stress. Research has shown that the brain signals to the gut, which is why stress can inflame gastrointestinal symptoms; communication may flow the other way too, from gut to brain.

A 2013 UCLA study among 36 healthy women revealed that consuming probiotics in yogurt reduced brain activity in areas that handle emotion, including stress compared to people who consumed yogurt without probiotics or no yogurt at all.

This study was small so more research is needed to confirm the results, but considering yogurt is full of calcium and protein in addition to probiotics, you really can't go wrong by adding more of it to your diet.

3. Oatmeal

First rule of thumb: Don't completely deny your craving. According to MIT research, carbohydrates can help the brain make serotonin, the same substance regulated by antidepressants. But instead of reaching for that sugary bear claw, go for complex carbs.

"Stress can cause your blood sugar to rise,Mangieri says, "so a complex carb like oatmeal won't contribute to your already potential spike in blood glucose."

4. Turkey breast

The amino acid, found in protein-containing foods, helps produce serotonin, "the chemical that regulates hunger and feelings of happiness and well-being," Mangieri says. On its own, tryptophan may have a calming effect.

In a 2006 study published in the Journal of Psychiatry Neuroscience, men and women who were argumentative (based on personality tests) took either tryptophan supplements or a placebo for 15 days.
Those who took tryptophan were perceived as more agreeable by their study partners at the end of the two weeks compared with when they didn't take it. Other foods high in tryptophan include nuts, seeds, tofu, fish, lentils, oats, beans and eggs.

5.Pistachio

When you have an ongoing loop of negative thoughts playing in your mind, doing something repetitive with your hands may help silence your inner monologue. Think knitting or kneading bread—or even shelling nuts like pistachios or peanuts.

The rhythmic moves will help you relax. Plus, the added step of cracking open a shell slows down your eating, making pistachios a diet-friendly snack. What's more, pistachios have heart-health benefits."Eating pistachios may reduce acute stress by lowering blood pressure and heart rate," Mangieri says. "The nuts contain key phytonutrients that may provide antioxidant support for cardiovascular health."

6. Seeds

Flaxseed, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds are all great sources of magnesium (as are leafy greens, yogurt, nuts and fish).

Loading up on the mineral may help regulate emotions."Magnesium has been shown to help alleviate depression, fatigue and irritability," Sass says. "When you're feeling especially irritable during that time of the month, the mineral also helps to fight PMS symptoms, including cramps and water retention."
